Project 365 | Victoria BC Portrait Photographer | My Life

If you have never heard of a 365 project, it is basically taking a picture every day of the year.  There are thousands, maybe millions, of people every year that commit on January 1st to take a photo everyday.  If you do a search, you will find many links to blogs and flickr sites for people to track their journey.  Some people have themes each day, or month...ie 365 days of their child, or 365 days of flowers.  Some people have different themes for each day of the month, or an inspiration page.  I was originally going to try and do two separate projects - one of just Messina Bean...and then another of everything else, but decided that may be hard down the road and don't want to quit :)  My compromise is that some days I may post 2 pictures or maybe 3 but more often than not, several times a week, there will be a weimaraner on these pages.  Another goal was to try different things, which could mean composition, editing, flash, etc.  It also means that I am not always looking for the technically perfect photo, but sometimes the story that goes along with the emotionally perfect photo is soooo much better.  I hope you enjoy my journey.
PS I decided to start on December 31st....not the first of January, just because I wanted to be different AND I love some pictures I took on the 31st.

About Me | Victoria BC Portrait Photographer

Like many photographers, I am often behind the camera, not in front of it. I got an updated this November for my Christmas card. I set up everything and my sister took the shot of my baby…Messy Bean!

I have been back in Victoria for over 2 years now. I love everything about it: the ocean, the weather (even the rain), the laid back attitude.

I found my love of photography when I got more involved in photographing my cousin’s dogs. The weimaraner is a regal and highly photogenic dog with great expressions and it was so much fun. I continued to build my portfolio at dog events such as agility, obedience, field, and tracking. However, it was my sister, who has been my biggest supporter, who nudged me into really pursuing this passion. Sometimes it is sadness that pushes us forward as well. I lost my dad in the summer of 2006, and it was then that I realized just how many moments that we missed (moments carried forever in our hearts and heads) but not caught in print.

In the summer of 2007, I shot my sister’s wedding (yes also the maid of honor). With rave reviews, I started to think about expanding this from passion to reality. Again, it was another catalyst that really pushed me forward, my nephew John Russell. He and I share a birthday and I can’t believe he will be 2 in June of 2010. He is welcoming a sibling this year as well, so a lot of exciting new moments to capture. I realized that capturing breathtaking moments makes me want to tear up sometime. The many expressions and emotions that people feel, caught on camera, is why I do this.

I specialize in on location natural light photography (will use a flash if needed). Yes I can produce that posed family portrait, but more often, I take a photojournalism view and just watch the babies, toddlers, and children as they move through the day. I like our sessions to be fun and not stressful, we all lay on the grass or on the floor or on the beach.

I “get” that children need breaks and snacks and sometimes treats (I carry things in my brown suitcase for just those times). I schedule only 1 shoot each morning or afternoon, to allow for lots of time to setup and interact and moments that just happen. I would hate to miss a great shot, because I needed to be somewhere and needed to pack up.

Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Booking Fall Mini Sessions

Hi
I am booking fall Mini Sessions on October 24th. Bring your family (up to 4 people, $25 for each additional adult) and enjoy a TBA beautiful fall location. We will make sure we get the perfect family shot for the annual Christmas card, but will also take some portraits of relationships---siblings, mother/child, and individual shots of the little ones. Session fee is $50 for approximately 30 minutes and you will receive 8-10 edited proofs to choose from in a private online private gallery. I am also booking regular sessions as well until October 31st and every session that is booked will receive 24 FREE custom Christmas Cards. They are almost ready to go and check back by the end of next week for the rollout of my 2009 Christmas card designs.
